Hematology

Hematology is one of the most important areas of medicine — it studies the circulatory system (both the blood itself and the blood-forming organs), the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. A hematologist specialises in the treatment of blood diseases, in laboratory research and in developing methods for diagnosing and preventing pathology.

Which conditions are treated by a hematologist?

A hematologist deals with blood diseases, but hematological pathologies are often systemic.

The specialist works in the following directions:

• Therapy of pathologies associated with impaired blood coagulation (e.g. hemophilia).
• Treatment of malignant hematological tumours — a wide group of diseases: leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other pathologies.
• Therapy of hereditary diseases (e.g. hemorrhagic diathesis).
• Treatment of anemia — not only iron but also folate deficiency, as well as hemolytic anemia, in which the bone marrow produces a normal number of erythrocytes but they are destroyed at high speed.
